The Leica SL 2 firmware update 2.0 brings, besides the possibility of MultiShot, many other innovations and adjustments in the field of photo and video.
Leica SL2 firmware update 2.0 with 187 Megapixel MultiShot
As you might know, the Leica SL2 has a powerful "in-body" image stabilization through sensor shift technology. This makes it possible to take pictures at slow shutter speeds with any Leica L and M lens. Its extremely powerful operation allows stable pictures to be taken for up to a full second without losing the exceptional Leica picture quality. In addition to image stabilization, the Leica SL2 can now use the same technique for the MultiShot mode. Up to eight consecutive shots are taken at lightning speed, shifting the sensor between each exposure in half-pixel increments. This important feature results in photographs with an incredible quadrupled resolution of as many as 187 Megapixels, leading to an extreme increase in visible detail. Because the Leica SL2 uses the electronic shutter in this mode, there is almost no difference noticeable during shooting compared to taking a normal picture. At extremely high speed, both a standard DNG and a MultiShot recording are stored on the SD card.

Since the Leica SL2 uses the electronic shutter in the camera in MultiShot mode, instead of the standard focal plane shutter, a number of things need to be taken into account when taking pictures:
- Only full-frame lenses are suitable for use with the MultiShot function.
- You can use any aperture between F/1.0 and F/16.
- All ISO settings between 50 and 3200 can be used.
- The use of flash is not possible.
- The electronic shutter is always used in the MultiShot mode.
- The MultiShot function automatically deactivates image stabilization (BIS and OIS) in the lens if available.
- Shutter speeds range from 1/40,000 to 1 second.
Leica SL2 firmware update 2.0
The Leica SL 2 firmware update 2.0 brings, besides the possibility of MultiShot, many other innovations and adjustments in the field of photo and video.
Overview of innovations in the Leica SL2 firmware update 2.0:
- Multishot allows the photographer to take shots with a resolution of up to 187MP. One picture is taken with a normal resolution (47MP) and one with a high resolution (187MP).
- Improvement of the video menu GUI
In the submenus of the video mode, a white header at the top of the LCD indicates that you are working in video mode. - Improving the AF field size setting
The size of the AF Field can now be changed, without moving the AF Field, by holding the AF Field for a longer time. - SD card naming
After formatting the SD card in the camera, the card is named "Leica SL2". - Detection of M lenses
6-bit coded M lenses are now always detected with the Leica M-Adapter L. - Elimination of small artifacts with very fast continuous photography
In the "Continuous - Very High Speed" mode, some artifacts were shown in the DNG under certain settings, which have now been deleted. - Connection improvements with Leica PHOTOS and Image Shuttle
General improvements for a faster and more stable connection between camera, smartphone or computer.
